The CAT6 FTP (Foiled Twisted Pair) Jumper is a shielded networking cable designed to provide enhanced protection against electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio frequency interference (RFI) in high-noise environments. Unlike UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair) jumpers, FTP jumpers feature a thin layer of aluminum foil that wraps around the 4-pair twisted conductors, creating a continuous Faraday cage that reflects or absorbs external interference, ensuring stable and reliable data transmission even in challenging environments such as industrial facilities, data centers, or areas with heavy electrical equipment. As a CAT6-rated jumper, it supports bandwidth up to 550 MHz and data transfer speeds of up to 1 Gbps over its typical short length (1 to 10 meters), with 10 Gbps capability for runs under 55 meters, making it suitable for high-speed, interference-prone networking applications.

The construction of the CAT6 FTP Jumper includes 4-pair stranded copper conductors (24 AWG) with a tight twist ratio to minimize internal crosstalk, combined with the outer foil shield to block external interference. A drain wire is also included, running parallel to the twisted pairs and in contact with the foil shield, which allows for proper grounding of the shield— a critical step to ensure the shield’s effectiveness. Without proper grounding, the foil shield can act as an antenna, amplifying interference rather than blocking it. The jumper is terminated with RJ45 male connectors on both ends, which are often shielded to maintain the integrity of the Faraday cage and prevent interference from entering or exiting through the connectors. The connectors feature gold-plated contacts (50 µm) for improved conductivity and corrosion resistance, and many models include snagless boots to protect the connector tabs during installation and handling.

The CAT6 FTP Jumper is particularly well-suited for environments where EMI/RFI is a concern, such as industrial plants, hospitals, data centers with high-density equipment, and areas near power lines or fluorescent lighting. It is commonly used to connect sensitive devices like servers, routers, IP cameras, and VoIP phones, where signal integrity is critical to avoid data loss or transmission errors. Additionally, it is compatible with PoE and PoE+ technologies, making it suitable for powering devices in interference-prone areas without sacrificing performance. While FTP jumpers are slightly more expensive than UTP jumpers, their enhanced shielding provides a valuable solution for environments where unshielded cables would struggle to maintain reliable performance. When selecting a CAT6 FTP Jumper, it is important to choose products that meet ANSI/TIA-568, ISO/IEC 11801, and EN 50173 standards, ensuring proper shielding effectiveness and compliance with industry guidelines. Proper installation, including correct grounding of the drain wire, is also essential to maximize the cable’s interference protection capabilities.
