  Multi-Mode Network Patch Cord

The multi-mode network patch cord is a versatile fiber-optic solution optimized for short-haul, high-bandwidth applications, making it a staple in data centers, enterprise offices, and small-to-medium enterprise (SME) networks. Unlike single-mode fiber, multi-mode fiber has a wider core (typically 50/125um or 62.5/125um) that transmits multiple light beams (modes), enabling it to handle high data rates over shorter distances—ideal for environments where devices are spaced within 550 meters (the maximum distance for 10 Gbps with OM4 fiber). This design balances performance and cost, as multi-mode works with lower-cost VCSEL (Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser) transceivers, reducing overall network expenses compared to single-mode alternatives.

Performance-wise, multi-mode patch cords support data rates from 1 Gbps to 100 Gbps, depending on the fiber grade: OM3 (up to 300 meters at 10 Gbps), OM4 (up to 550 meters at 10 Gbps), and OM5 (supporting multiple wavelengths for 40/100 Gbps). They operate at shorter wavelengths (850nm or 1300nm), with attenuation rates higher than single-mode (typically <3.5 dB/km at 850nm), limiting transmission distances but ensuring cost-effectiveness for short-haul needs. This makes them perfect for data center applications like server-to-switch connections, storage area network (SAN) links, and high-definition video streaming—tasks that demand high bandwidth but do not require long-distance transmission.

Multi-mode patch cords are constructed with flexibility and practicality in mind. Their jackets (often LSZH or PVC) are lightweight and pliable, making them easy to route through cable trays, wall cavities, or dense server racks without kinking. Common connectors include LC (for high-density data centers) and SC (for enterprise offices), both with ceramic ferrules to maintain low insertion loss (<0.3dB). The cords are color-coded for easy grade identification: aqua for OM3/OM4, orange for 62.5/125um, and lime green for OM5—simplifying cable management in mixed-grade environments. They comply with standards like TIA/EIA-568-C.3 and IEC 61754-4, ensuring compatibility with all multi-mode hardware.

For organizations prioritizing high bandwidth and cost efficiency in short-haul settings, the multi-mode network patch cord delivers an unbeatable combination—supporting the speed needs of modern data centers and offices while keeping networking costs accessible.
